We needed an expert’s point of view on how to keep things organized this season, so we got some hot tips from Robin at Southern Concierge. They are an amazing moving & organization concierge service.
Here are Robin’s top tips for decluttering around the holidays:
As you pull items out of storage to begin decorating, go ahead and throw away, or donate, items you no longer use. If you don’t plan on decorating with it this year, and didn’t last year either, pass it on to someone who will use and enjoy.
Have small tubs (they can be a box, bag, whatever) labeled Donate, Keep and Trash. As you go through a box of Christmas decor, separate each item in the box. As quickly as possible, get trash in the trash can and donated items in the car. Don’t revisit and let yourself change your mind!
Hire a professional organizer. It can be so worth the cost for the amount of work that can be accomplished in a short afternoon!
Ask for help! If there are family members close, call and ask if they could help you one day. There might be many treasures that will be easier to let go of knowing one of your children will take home and add to their Christmas collection.
Be sure to share the memory behind the treasure, or better yet, write out the memory and attach to item. Knowing the sentimental reasoning might be just the thing needed to have a family member want to keep a treasure!
Thanks for sharing, Robin!
