I get asked all the time how to lower energy bills, so today I’m creating this post as a reference to anyone looking for easy ways to make their home more energy-efficient! In my opinion, these are the easiest things you can do. How do you reduce your energy bill?
1. Love long showers? Install low-flow showerheads.
A low-flow showerhead uses 1/2 the water as a conventional showerhead and you may not even notice a difference.
2. Take note of drafty windows.
Those tiny drafts have a huge impact on your energy bill. Sealing gaps anywhere in your home is inexpensive and will definitely increase your home’s efficiency.
3. Rid your home of energy vampires.
Chargers that are left plugged in but aren’t connected to anything still use energy and are called “energy vampires.” They can be responsible for up to 10% of your energy bill, so making it a habit of unplugging them is a great idea.
4. Don’t wash laundry with hot water.
Up to 90% of the energy used by your washing machine is for heating the water. Washing on cold when you can is definitely a smart choice.
5. Don’t peek at those cookies.
Every time you open your oven, the temperature can drop by 25 degrees.
6. Last but not least, lower your thermostat.
Leaving home for the day or weekend? Make it a habit to lower your thermostat. Energy.gov states that lowering your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees just while you’re at work will save 5% to 15% every year. Using your ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort.
